The Greek bond markets plunged yesterday amid growing worries among investors that the country will need to restructure its debts in spite of a proposed €45bn ($60bn) assistance package from the international community.

Greek two-year bond yields, which have an inverse relationship with price, rose 3 percentage points – the biggest one-day jump since the country joined the euro nine years ago – to close at 13.14 per cent.

This is the highest yield on short-dated debt in the world, according to US bank, Brown Brothers Harriman.

It is even higher than those of Argentina, 8.8 per cent, and Venezuela, 11 per cent, two countries shunned by many international investors because of the mismanagement of their economies.

Investors said that the Greek bond market was now in effect pricing in a government default as two-year bond yields were trading more than 12 percentage points higher than German bunds, Europe's benchmark market.

The Greek stock market fell nearly 3 per cent and the euro eased against the dollar.

Gary Jenkins, head of fixed income research at Evolution, said: “The market is pricing in a Greek default, if not in the short term then in the medium term.”

Nigel Rendell, senior strategist at RBC Capital Markets, added: “Greece is now trading like the weakest emerging markets.”

Dominique Strauss-Kahn, managing director of the International Monetary Fund, and Jean-Claude Trichet, president of the European Central Bank, have been asked to brief members of the German parliament tomorrow on details of the rescue package for the debt-strapped Greek economy, in order to win their approval for any possible loan to Greece.

Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, also sought to reassure both German voters and the international financial markets that her government will defend the stability of the euro at all costs, while insisting on tough conditions for a multi- billion euro loan to Greece.
